Nestled in the heart of San Francisco’s Chinatown at 671 Broadway, Vip Coffee & Cake Shop stands as a beloved local gem serving authentic Hong Kong–style comfort food with a nostalgic twist. This bustling breakfast restaurant, café, cake shop, and fast food joint invites diners to experience the rich, unapologetically old-school flavors of Hong Kong’s cha chaan teng culture right in the City by the Bay.
The menu at Vip Coffee & Cake Shop is a treasure trove of iconic dishes that hark back to simpler times, delivering punchy, satisfying flavors with every bite. From the moment you step inside, you’ll be drawn to the aromatic allure of their Egg Tarts—golden, flaky pastries filled with luscious, silky custard that melt in your mouth and evoke memories of classic Hong Kong bakeries. Their signature Baked Pork Chop over Rice is a hearty, soulful dish with tender pork chops drenched in a savory red sauce, layered atop fluffy white rice and baked to bubbling perfection. This dish alone remains a magnetic reason for patrons to return time and again.
For those craving something more substantial, the Braised Ox Tongue in Tomato Sauce offers an unexpectedly tender and flavorful delight, while the Singapore-Style Noodles and Wonton Noodle Soup provide authentic tastes of regional classics, balancing richness and umami in every spoonful. The menu also boasts comfort favorites like Fried Chicken Wings with French Fries and the unique Hot Dog Bun Egg Custard Tart that combine iconic Western and Asian influences in true cha chaan teng style.
When it comes to drinks, Vip Coffee & Cake Shop stays true to tradition with an impressive spread of iced and hot beverages: from strong, aromatic Hong Kong milk tea and refreshing Iced Lemon Coke to more comforting choices like Iced Horlicks or Ovaltine. Their coffees and teas are perfectly brewed to complement any meal or snack on the extensive menu.
The atmosphere here is unpretentious and wonderfully nostalgic. Longtime customers, like Alzila, fondly recall coming here since their youth, drawn by the consistent quality and familiar flavors that feel like a cozy culinary embrace. Veteran diner Matthew Larry has savored their “HK Style 'western' food” for over 20 years, appreciating the straightforward, no-frills dining experience that guarantees satisfying meals without pretense.
True to many traditional Hong Kong cafés, the service can be a bit slow at times, especially during busy hours—a fact noted by customers like Jeff Ho and Jesse Lee. This lively hub often sees a bustling crowd served by a small, dedicated staff, which may stretch resources but never diminishes the genuine warmth and authenticity of the experience. While the ambiance isn’t about fancy frills or high-end decor, it radiates an honest charm where the food itself tells all.
For those seeking a flavorful escape and a taste of beloved Hong Kong classics—whether it’s the crispy pineapple bun, the savory curry beef with rice, or the satisfying steak special with pepper gravy—Vip Coffee & Cake Shop is a dependable destination. It’s a place to relish comforting flavors, steeped in tradition and brimming with heart.
If you cherish authentic, nostalgic food with a story behind every dish, Vip Coffee & Cake Shop promises a rewarding dining experience that’s both nostalgic and delicious—an essential stop for anyone exploring the vibrant culinary tapestry of San Francisco’s Chinatown.

Been a customer since I was a youngin and I could still remember the delicious first bite. They’re known for their baked dishes such as the infamous baked pork chop rice, which is mainly the reason I come here for. Service is great and the food is also great, they open early and serve up breakfast meal sets which are also a great choice. I definitely recommend this spot for anyone interested in Hong Kong style dishes. Definitely will be back!
VIP Coffee Shop has been on my list of restaurants to revisit for a long time. They close at 6pm and I can't make it to Chinatown until after 6pm on weekdays. I had a day off today and it took over 25 minutes for them to make my baked pork chops spaghetti $14 at 11am. There's this single waitress that handles the dining room orders, phone orders, bus the tables and the bakery take out counter. Obviously they are short handed. The pork chop spaghetti tasted OK. It was slightly burnt on top to infuse the tomato taste onto the dish. It would have been nice if there were cheese or chopped onions in there. It was missing that wow factor. With Washington Bakery gone, this might be the next best option for HK style tea cafe food in Chinatown.
Great milk tea :) reminds me of HK The baked pork over rice was flavorful but the pork was a bit dry. Only there pieces of pork. Egg tart was good. I think if they were freshly made, it would've been better. They did heat it up for us though. That was nice.
This is a great place for HK Style 'western' food. It is not pretentious, you get what you order and the food is almost always delicious. I've eaten here for about 20 years now and we always go back on the weekends. The prices are definitely reasonable. A good alternative to dim sum. Long lines sometimes, but worth the wait. Don't expect a smile from the waitresses - as you don't at most chinese restaurants in chinatown. Anyways, I understand it has since changed ownership. I have yet to try it out since then. What I like is the curry beef spaghetti, baked pork chop over rice, beef fried rice, pineapple bun with butter, curry beef pockets, fish chowder soup, vip macaroni soup, etc... Worth a try!
They are way under staffed, too many uncles and aunties are sitting eating inside. So service is really slooooow. If you are in a hurry this place isn’t for you. The food is basic low end Hong Kong old school style. It’s simple basic foods, not fancy or trendy. Like the thousands years old egg and salted pork congee. Pineapple bun was ok. Super nice but busy ladies.
Even though I tasted most of the breakfast sets in Chinatown, I only recently discovered the breakfast at VIP, which is a steal! I enjoyed their chicken omelette, which is healthy and not too oily (the fries are oily) but the warm butter bun and HK milk tea are nice. The service is also friendly. There are lots of spaces even though the decor is a bit old. They offer a lot for the money!
A classic no-frills Hong Kong tea house. We grabbed some pastries and enjoyed HK milk tea alongside perfectly flaky egg tarts and rich BBQ pork buns. The portions are generous - you definitely get your money's worth! The aunties working the counter were friendly and helpful. Good to know they take credit cards too, which isn't always the case at these traditional spots.
Good comfort food. Got an egg, ham, French fries, coffee, and bun, combo, for a good price! It was enough for breakfast and lunch! Very filling! They also carry a great selection of Chinese pastries. We visit when come to Chinatown! Nothing fancy but good food!
